OVERVIEW:

SPOILED BRAT was the brainchild of guitarist Lawrence Rambo. The band was formed in Orlando, Florida, with bassist Tom Katas, drummer Tommy Vincent, and a New York transplant named Frank Dicaro, aka Franky Dee, on vocals. Dicaro would previously serve time in local New York circuit bands with such players as future White Lion guitarist Vito Bratta and Ted Poley (Danger Danger), playing shows alongside local legends Twisted Sister and Zebra, among others. Once a lineup of SPOILED BRAT was solidified, the band wasted no time jumping out into the local club scene. The band would also record a 3-song demo at this time. However, this first go would be short-lived due to Rambo relocating to London, England for a time. He would carry that demo with him. There, Rambo began to develop connections in the UK to bring SPOILED BRAT across the Atlantic.

Upon his return to Florida, he immediately reconnected with Dicaro, Katas, and Vincent, then returned to the UK with the band in tow. There, the band spent three months playing a string of dates across London at famous venues such as The Rainbow Theater, The Hope and Anchor, Dingwall’s, The Hammersmith, and the Marquee Club.

While in the UK, Rambo would receive word that there was some interest in SPOILED BRAT back in the States from an artist management company called Chappell Entertainment, which at the time managed Night Ranger and had connections with MCA Records. Head of the company, Chip Chappell would fly the band back to the States to discuss a partnership between the two. Now under Chapell’s management, SPOILED BRAT would enter Lake Bradford Studios to record with engineer Bob Tomas. Seven blistering party rock tracks with big hooks and catchy choruses akin to early Keel, Icon, Black N’ Blue, and the heavier side of Ratt would be laid down. In 1984, SPOILED BRAT released its debut album “Hot to Trot”, fully financed by Rambo, under the independent imprint Phoenix Records. Rambo would also handle all manufacturing financing behind the albums it released. Small runs of vinyl and cassettes would be produced that would receive limited distribution. Still, the album would be a modest independent release. Around this time, the group would undergo its first lineup change, replacing drummer Vincent with Bud Robertson. Keyboardist Frank Albano would also be added. Two years of extensive touring on the Southeast club circuit would follow the album’s release. In 1985, SPOILED BRAT recorded its second full-length album during a touring break, which attracted the attention of MCA Records before it was released. Chappell Entertainment/Phoenix Records and MCA Records struck a seven-figure deal to push SPOILED BRAT to a much higher level of success than had been previously realized. Using their combined finances and industry clout, they had high hopes for SPOILED BRAT. Unfortunately, undisclosed issues with lead singer Dicario would cause delays with this plan. However, Chappell Entertainment/Phoenix Records and MCA Records were undeterred. The record was already recorded, and the primary songwriter, Rambo, was still involved. ​ A decision was made to put the band back on the road in smaller clubs with the intent of auditioning lead singers to replace Dicario. By the time that a new singer was brought in this phase of SPOILED BRAT had seemingly run its course. Rambo began stirring the band into another direction.
